Calling out guilty pleasure programs. Since when was TV not a guilty pleasure all together? I think its hilarious when you hear someone say or celeb say, “Yes, I must admit I watch the Jersey Shore.”
Why don’t they just admit they watch the shore cast and all it’s hot tub glory because Snookie and CO are in a category called “No threat”. I believe America has embraced MTV’s newest cast because everyone feels they’re no threat to themselves as I have never heard “I want to look like Snookie”.
Snookie is an outspoken un-lady like Jersey Shored chunky 4-11 spoofed haired princess and she’s the only one in the world that claims to be. Situation is Zack Morris left on the Shore to get a tan and pump out sit ups while riding the wave of popularity until Kelly comes back.
When people are less good-looking or look like a character type creature they are not a threat unlike like a Brody & Audrina. Let’s be honest we all know it took them 5 seasons till America admitted the Hills was a guilty pleasure of theirs and I know it’s because they are beautiful and had the smell of a threat. Makes you wonder?

I don’t live in Hollywood and I’m not competing with Hills cast members for screen time so they are not a threat to me. I watched The Hills and I watch Jersey Shore purely for entertainment. I don’t find anyone on either show to be all that attractive anyway.

Hills too but sometimes I’d feel left like nothing happened during an episode. BTW, Audrina is painful to look at.
I agree with K on the attractiveness factor of the people on those shows, with the exception of Lauren, Kristen, and Whitney who are all very beautiful.
I watched both and I will say I think Jersey Shore is about 10 times more entertaining than The Hills though!
I like most of the kids on Jersey Shore. They seem like decent kids except for Ronnie and Sam.
The reason I prefer Jersey Shore over The Hills is because the kids on Jersey Shore actually have personality. They are all comedians. The Hills didn’t have that. Spencer was funny, but he was never a central character. Kristin was beautiful and had a lot of spunk, but the show became too scripted to deal with. Audrina is the most boring girl to ever be on television.
The Jersey Shore is popular because the situation created an over the top character and ran with it. If the situation wasnt on the Shore… there would be no season 2.
jersey shore is really full of entertainment. And I think it’s kind of rude for you to be calling them less good-looking.. lol I don’t know why people make such a big deal of this show anyways, like it’s awsome but the criticism is just dumb. Overall its just a t.v. show..
I watch Jersey Shore for the same reason anyone else does…because they’re ridiculous and that entertains me. Honestly, I would consider anyone in reality tv a “no threat” as you so haughtily put it, Shayne. People are weary of the typical fake-looking Hollywood wannabe types and banal reality programming. Kudos to the cast for their ability to parlay being “less good-looking” and mere “character type creatures” into the most successful reality show to ever air on MTV.
The Hills was an over-manufactured show with fake events and people made with fake parts. Breast Augmentation is one thing, a complete body make-over is different.
Jersey Shore is popular because it reaches out to a larger audience. Every college campus has the “guido” fraternity and on the East Coast especially, we all know about the “Guido” culture. It was great to see it on TV, it provides for good entertainment.
Sure the girls on the show aren’t 5’8, 105lbs with D cup fake boobs, extensions and make-up artists on hand for every shot. They are real people. Snooki is short, she isn’t stick thin but she is real. Its nice seeing people on TV who aren’t underweight. Its more realistic than the Hills. I don’t believe it has anything to do with being “threatened” by “good looking” people. There is way more to life in the real world than being skinny and looking perfect. The rest of America has to get up at 5am Monday-Friday to make a paycheck.
As a Jersey Shore native I can speak for my fellow Shoreites when I say this show should actually be called “Bennies.” Bennies are those from other northeastern states that come down every summer, drive up the rents, act like idiots in public and widen the hole in the ozone layer with the amount of hair products they use. Unfortunately a lot of Shore towns get their money to run things for the year from these people. Fortunately much of it comes from fines and bails.
JWOW is definately hot! Other than that being said, people watch these shows for the entertainment factor. The Hills cast members are a bunch of lames. The Jersey cast members are able to keep a crowd because of how entertaining they actually are. Especially for people who know nothing about the NY/NJ metropolitan area. It’s like opening up “pandora’s box” and introducing America to the “unknown”.
i dont think it has anything to do with the way they look. they are a guilty pleasure because it is pure entertainment. the things the cast says brings on many laughs- even though they are not even trying to be funny. they completely embrace being classless and trashy. weve all had a few too many where we act like drunk fools- and these outlandish people do the same every day, but have no remorse for it. when we think things in our life are bad, we can turn on jersey shore and feel better about our life! they are FUN to watch- thats the appeal of jersey shore. it has nothing to do that they are not as “beautiful” or skinny as the hills kids. which by the way is not a good comparison because the hills is completely scripted, with not much going on each episode. when you turn on jersey shore you know you will be watching people not thinking before the speak, and scenarios that are happening without a script.
i love to watch the jersey shore because its an escape from the monotony of everyday life. they’re just a bunch of 20-something’s living life and having fun (not mention getting paid to do it). i usually laugh my ass off and learn great new words like smush room. hahah!
i have a whole new vocabulary from reading the dirty and watching jersey shore. lol!

Why do 99.9% of actresses get plastic surgery? Because good-looks get you booked. Your opinion doesn’t make a whole lot of sense. The ratings for the Hills could have been great if those kids had been more like Kristin Cavallarai. Train wrecks are fun. Rich kids with no personality are not.
I would have to disagree with you Shayne and agree with the consensus of the responses to your post. I watched both shows, both for the same reason: pure entertainment. However, I love the Jersey Shore more than The Hills not for the reasons you gave, but because it’s so different from anything I know. I am a Bev Hills native, and thus the Hills was an opportunity to see people I know act horribly about their fake lives, and Audrina is so painful to look at. Great way to start a discussion about reality TV though. Kudos! xox

I like this site but, I think this post is dumb. I think you are truly wondering why they are so famous and if you can attain this level of fame. Do your thing, BE REAL. Just like the Jersey Shore cast and the Kardashians and you will reach fame.
I love the show because it’s pure entertainment. I could care less about looks, it’s acutally their personalities that bring everyone back.
I agree with SDLR on this one, Audrina is BEAUTIFUL & Broady is a total hottie. i loved the hills. the cast was just amazing looking. The Jersey Shore is hilerious but the girls are total trash & the guys a plain jane boys. its funny because they make complete arses of themselves, FIGHT & talk like retards. classic
