Baby Registry Time

by admin

Let the fun begin…

I think my husband just likes to shoot the scanning gun more than he is actually cares about the baby product. Any LR Ladies know the essentials that are a must? I don’t want to miss anything.

sdlr

FYI- Ted Baker bag, William Rast jeans, H&M scarf, Persol sunglasses, Chanel flats and tank by Forever 21.

My son loved his bassinet that vibrated and played music, it helped when he was colicky. His swing with a swirly thing overhead was another thing he could not live with out. The newer models even have ipod/mps player attachments so you can control the playlist your child hears while swinging or in the bassinet. Happy shopping!!!

A baby sling! I personally loved the Jelly Bean, by Munchkin. Sweet prints, and no crazy wrapping fabric around your body. 1 of my babies was very Colic-e…and this kept her calm, and allowed me 2 hands to work with. It also helps with having the baby snuggled to you and keeps nosey, people from touching your baby with non-cleaned hands. Yes, I was that mom.

Yes, yes definatly a good carrier! I never liked putting my son in a stroller those first 6 months or so so I would always put him in the carrier. He liked it MUCH better too. Babies ALWAYS feel more comfortable being closer to.mommy, remember that. It’s funny because I always thought a stroller would be super important but it turns out I didn’t use it much that whole first year. I just always prefered having my son close to me & felt bad for him being in a stroller. Also a carrier is a LIFE SAVER when you need to do stuff around the house! And I’m with June Cleaver, I wasn’t a fan of COMPLETE strangers touching my son. I will never understand total strangers who think it’s totally OK to touch a little tiny baby. But that’s a whole different topic…

Also a co-sleeper. I REALLY wanted to co sleep with my son but my husband was scared he would roll on him. So we got a co sleeper that attaches to our bed. You still co sleep with them but they have their own bed. And co sleeping makes night feedings MUCH easier!! Just roll over, lift up your shirt and they fall right back to sleep & you do too! I know co sleeping isn’t for everyone but it’s just another option to consider.

Oh & mobiles! Start out with black & white cards (because babies can only see in black & white, you can buy a set on Amazon) & hang them above the bed, changing table, anywhere! They will stimulate the baby & help with eye development. Then as your baby develops you can switch out the mobiles for colored cards or ANY colored things. Amazon has some really cool things. Hanging them over the changing table is great because they distract them while you’re trying to change their diaper!

Make sure to get a Belly Bandit. You wear it for 6 weeks after giving birth and it helps your body expel excess fluid and your muscles reattach to your abdominal wall, allowing your stomach to return to it’s pre-pregnancy ways. I also love the Moby wrap. It can be worn a ton of different ways and grows with your baby. Also, check out the Tummy Tub. Pure genius!

In my line of work we see a lot of parents rationalizing all sorts of crazy things but you have to find what works for you. I highly recommend Tracy Hogg’s book, The Baby Whisperer and her EASY method = Eat, Activity, Sleep and You (time).

Now, time to reveal the gender!

Heather, I wish I would have gotten something like the Belly Bandit. Because although I didn’t have a problem losing the baby weight at all I can still tell my stomach muscles are separated. My stomach is pretty flat, I got lucky in that department but like I said I can just tell it’s not the same. Ok, I know you & I have had pretty different opinions about things but that’s in the past & I’m trying not to be so negative. So I hope it’s OK if I ask you for a little advise. My husband & I have been talking about a second baby (my son will be 2 in September). I was wondering if I wore the belly bandit after my second baby would it help my stomach muscles? Or is it too late at that point?

And Shayne, speaking of books. I HIGHLY recommend Ina May’s Guide To Child Birth she also has one called Guide To Breast Feeding. Both books that EVERY pregnant woman should read.

Hey TL. I know a lot of people like the belly bandit, but something that my husbands mom (who has 8 children) used and she has a super flat stomach was a cincher corset! Sadly she didnt tell me until it was too late, but you sleep with it you do everything with it on and it works. They have a good one at Fredricks of Hollywood. Congrats on trying for another baby and good luck!!!!

DO NOT LISTEN TO INA MAY GASKIN! She is a kook who let her baby die from respitory distress rather than take him to the hospital. BTW, Neonatal fatality at home birth is three times that of hospital births. Don’t read her.

I had a hospital birth because I felt most comfortable with that. I did, however, have an all natural birth. I don’t know, I just thought her book was an easy read with a lot of great information and advice. But I totally think you have to take ANY baby book you read with a grain of salt. They almost always have a biased one way or the other. So I say read them and determine what works best for you. =)

While it’s best go start with your first pregnancy, I would still recommend using one as you will still be able to reap the benefits. You may not be able to undo the stretching out of your stomach from your previous but you can prevent any further detachment of the stomach muscles from happening and maybe even end up with a flatter belly than you started out with. On top of that, it really helps your baby carrier ie your uterus expell excess fluid and help you feel more normal more quickly.

Definetely a vibrating bassinet like Monique said.. I had a vibrating rocker and bouncer, it helped for my daughter to be upright because all infants have a little bit of stomach reflux. Besides the other basics, lots of SUPER SOFT blankets to swaddle in. Sleep sacks are great too. Comfort is key!

I LOVE how you used the scarf as a little cover-up.. personally I wasn’t one to buy all the maternity clothes that accentuated my baby bump.. I liked to cover it up like it was my own little surprise xD

Baby swing, boppy pillow, snugli seat, born carrier. Extra bottles and breast feeding accessories so there are always some ready. When you figure out what blankie/lovey is the baby’s favorite, BUY MULTIPLE!!! We have 4 of my daughters favorite blankets, paid double and triple on e-bay but cant put a price on my daughters happiness. Sending love to the mommy and daddy to be

I had a colic and reflux baby so these would have to be my must haves:

1)When picking a swing make sure to get one that plugs into the wall (charges). This was a lifesaver!!! You would hate for your batteries to die in the middle of the night.

2)Get a frontal carrier. My husband said he would never wear one until our son came and then we were both wearing one daily. We went with the baby bjorn just make sure to with the more expensive version- synergy or active…it has back support (if not you’ll die!!!).

3)Boppy Pillow- Not only did this help with bfing, but I could position him upright to sleep/play/feed etc.

4)I used a more heavy duty band after labor (squeem bands). Not only did it suck everything into place, but it helped me to eat less (felt fuller faster). They’re just not fun to wear.

I’ll think of more and add :)

    OMG… I forgot:

Sound machine- Not only was it soothing for him (the swishing noise-which btw you do this in their ear to calm them when crying), but if we had a dinner party at our home or out, it drowned out the noise.

I loved the Dunstan Baby Language DVD series. Not only did it help with the sounds my son was making but it gave me more ideas with burping and soothing.

We had a baby monitor that acted as a SIDS deterrent that was very nice to have. It senses motion and if your baby stops breathing for more than 20 seconds, it starts vibrating and making a bunch of sounds through the monitor. It gave us such peace of mind- I was so afraid of SIDS. If interested, look up AngelCare monitor.

Once my son started to move around a lot (rolling and standing), we had to change monitors as he would move off of the sensor pad. When that monitor goes off, you do lose a few years! Luckily, we never had a true scare and I have a healthy toddler that likes to terrorize my household now :)

    Shayne,

As a mother of 2 year old twins, I have many must haves..

Baby Nurse/night nanny for the first 6 weeks at least. Allows you to get a good night sleep and tranisition into motherhood.

Dr. Brown baby bottles-the best! And his pitcher to make formula for the day so you are not always making bottles.

The Miracle Blanket swaddle-the best out there! Nik will think it looks like a straight jacket but really your baby will want to be swaddled.

    White noise machine

A good video monitor- as a first time Mom, you will be crazy like we all were and want to keep looking at your baby when they are asleep. A sound monitor won’t give you the confidence that you will need the first year.

Schedule schedule schedule. The best thing for a baby! And get a book that you can record how much and what time your baby last ate and how much, napped etc. You will want to keep track of this the first couple of months.

Baby Signing Time Videos- My kids were signing at 7 months talking by 9 months. Great learning series.

I’ll think of some more things…

I almost bought that scarf 2 weeks ago at H&M.
Do not get a drop down side crib! As easy as you think they are they are recalled and should all be off the market!. Boppy pillow for yourself cause your stomach will be stretching wrap it around yourself when you sleep to help elevate your stomach so its not pulling it so much. Don’t buy into the Baby Einstein fad. I took a Child Infant class and it really does not help the baby at all. It actually is worse for the baby. Arms reach baby co sleeper, this was the best for the first 5 months!!! Also, I would get a stroller that you can put the car seat in so you don’t have to wake your sleeping baby. They have swaddle blankets that you just velcro together and it is like pre-swaddled for you. I loved those because I was soooo scared of SIDS that I found it so hard to swaddle my daughters on my own. Sorry I’m just going on and on, The Avent Soothie Paci is the BEST!!! If your going to give your baby a paci, some people opt not to, but if you are, I suggest you get like 100000 of them cause babies lose them and spit them. Also make sure you boil all the bottles nipples paci’s before you give them to your baby (something to keep you busy a few days before the baby comes). Ok sorry I just get so excited about babies :)

Depending on how you choose to feed your baby, Dr Brown’s bottles are fantastic. My newborn son has had bad colic and these cured it immediately! Lifesaver.

I got a Bugaboo buggy for my daughter and I’m still using it with my just born son. It’s great for long dog walks.

Muslin clothes! Not the prettiest things ever but they can be used for everything from spit up to comforter!! My daughter’s almost 3 and still had to have a “muzzy” to sleep. I must have literally 50 in my house!

I know another poster said not to buy in to the Baby Einstein thing, but personally, the DVD set was a godsend when I wanted 5 mins to go sterilise bottles or go get some cleaning done. I used them all the time with my daughter and intend to do so with my son when he’s a bit bigger! Each to their own and all that!

I get that DVDs help to give you a minute but fish tanks and other types of toys can give you the same effect. The American Academy of Pediatrics recommends no screen time before babies are 2 as TV affects the quickly developing brain of an infant in not so pleasant ways :x it’s hard to keep up sometimes when one year something is a fad and the next, we realize the negative effects and suddenly everyone turns against it.

I agree with a Boppy. I used it myself the first few days after giving birth. An umbrella strolled is amazing when your baby is a little older. A stroller that your carseat can fit into is needed when your baby is asleep and you don’t want to wake him/her. I have a Quinny Buzz for that (maxi cosi fits Quinny strolls). Bottle wise, our baby liked Born Free best, mold can grow in the hidden parts of Dr. Brown bottles. Diaper bags aren’t a need, just a chic bag and a changing pad. Sleep sheep, a glider, mobile, and night gowns. Also, keep the nose sucker that the hospital gives you, you’ll never find a better one.

Another piece of advice…start reading to your baby right away. Develope a routine and read your baby a book after a bath at night. Someone told me that if you read the same book every night to your baby, they will be able to recite it to you when they develope their language skills. I can attest to the fact that this is true. We read Good Night Moon every night and would obviously switch it up once in a while. As soon as my twins were vocal, they would finish the sentences of the book. Infants brains really are sponges. Also being consistent with reading helps them focus.

I wanted to add something else. Don’t sacrifice your and the babies comfort for what is “stylish”. I went stroller hunting forever, I hardly found any strollers that had cup holders and trays in the front for my daughter and cup holder in the back for me and a plus under for my bags. Being out and about and trying to push a stroller while holding your drink the babies milk keys etc is not easy, its so nice to have a place for them all!

An organic Ergo baby carrier. An absolute must! All those wraps are too much work. My son LOVED the Ergo.

A BOB Stroller. I like the Revolution model for it’s versatility–you can walk/jog and still use it in stores. BOB is the best you can get, IMO.

An organic Belly Bandit. Gotta go with the organic, especially if you end up having a c-section. It’s much softer.

A doula/coach for your birth. If I was having another child, I wouldn’t do it without a doula.
